Revenge may be a dish best served cold, but in The Lunatic Queen it comes flaming hot with vicious rhetoric and deeply coiled passion. Torben Betts' powerful and poetic language brings the historic tale of blood and betrayal to life in a way that goes right to the heart of a modern audience. Betts composes a classic tale with contemporary overtones that paints the picture of three powerful women struggling to fulfil their duties to God and country. Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Castile: saint or ruthless murderer? Juana the Mad, her daughter and successor: lunatic and religious fanatic or pious, love-starved child? Angelina, Juana's Moorish maid: faithful servant or plotting enemy?

Darkly comedic and troublingly timely, The Lunatic Queen questions devotion, duty and idealism with passion, wit and a chilling look at power and corruption.
