The Kitchen
THE KITCHEN by Arnold Wesker
London 1957. Rationing has come to an end. Rock and Roll is in the air, 'Ban the Bomb' marches in the street; new playwrights are storming the stage. Arnold Wesker's first and most performed play tells the story of one day in the basement kitchen of the Tivoli Restaurant, where thirty chefs, waitresses and porters battle to prepare and serve two thousand lunches.
'The world might have been a stage for Shakespeare, but to me it is a kitchen; where people come and go and cannot stay long enough to understand each other, and friendships, loves and enmities are forgotten as quickly as they are made.' Arnold Wesker
