One For The Road
By Harold Pinter
One For The Road opens with Nicholas, a guard appointed by the totalitarian government, interrogating Victor, an intellectual and apparent enemy of the state. Through separate scenes between Nicholas and Victor, Nicholas and Gila (Victor's wife) and Nicholas and Nicky (their young son) we learn that Victor, Gila and their son are being held captive in different rooms of a building. Victor and Gila have clearly been tortured and beaten.
One For The Road is a disturbing political piece which deals with physical and psychological torture, though not in any specific period or country, leaving it open to interpretation by directors and audiences.
