Nigel Coates: Lifestories

Central Saint Martins presents

Nigel Coates: Lifestories

Though he trained as an architect Nigel Coates, polymath and free-thinker, always approaches his work with an artist's eye. More than ten years after graduating he was among the first British architects to build in Japan during the bubble economy years. His projects there captured the eclectic spirit of the 1980s, featured furniture of his own design, and incorporated many works by artists and designers in his circle. He called the work of this period 'industrial baroque', a term he and fellow members of the NATO group (Narrative Architecture Today) had come up with to describe their attitude to design. This approach subsequently translated into his major tome, Guide to Ecstacity, published in 2003. Recent works include Mixtacity at Tate Modern, the Hypnerotosphere installation at the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Battersea Gods Home at the Design Museum, and new furniture and lighting collections for many Italian companies. He is a professor at the Royal College of Art where he has lead architecture since 1995.
