In pre-revolutionary Russia, a group of friends spends summer in the country, flirting, drinking and philosophising.  Members of a new professional class, these children of working people try to live like the idle rich.  But nothing fits, everyone is on edge, sensing the coming storm, and what should have been paradise turns into hell: debates become quarrels, relationships shatter, and a whole new life, painfully won from the grip of poverty, tears itself apart.  Angry, humane, funny and beautiful, Summerfolk tracks the forces that shaped a century through a month in the lives of a very ordinary group of friends.
