In the shadow of York Minster a group of workers are preparing to perform the Mystery plays for the festival of Corpus Christi. Their bosses belong to the newly moneyed, penny pinching, back stabbing merchant class, and their equally hilarious, socially ambitious wives. Add to this a visit by Richard II and his sick queen escaping the political machinations of the court in London, and you have all the ingredients of one of Anthony Minghella's most brilliantly crafted plays.
Written in 1982 at the end of Margret Thatcher's first term of office, this rarely performed piece looks at the nature of art in relation to patronage and the role that theatre plays in the lives of a local community fighting for artistic integrity. Funny and sad, ridiculous and painful, poignant and deeply moving it is Anthony Minghella at his most glorious.
