Hearing Voices
2010 UK National Tour
HEARING VOICES
by CLARE SUMMERSKILL
Performed by Clare Summerskill and her company ARTEMIS.
What really goes on behind the locked doors of a psychiatric hospital?
After a suicide attempt Clare Summerskill spent two months on such a ward in London. This is her personal account of life on an NHS ward, combined with testimonies she gathered from other mental health service users who were in hospital with her.
The entire script is taken directly from interviews conducted by Clare with each of the patients, combined with extracts from her own diary about her time on the ward and contributions from mental health professionals - some of whom are service-users themselves. The result is a unique and powerful piece of verbatim theatre, a courageous and extraordinary account of people's experiences behind locked doors.
This ground-breaking play reveals the views and personal histories of a group of people who are often hidden and excluded from mainstream society - and allows their voices to finally be heard.
