Rock 'n' Roll Art - Kevin Cummins, Paul Morley & Special Guests

Presented by Central Saint Martins

'I would like to live in Manchester. The transition between Manchester and death would be unnoticeable.' Mark Twain

Manchester holds a sublime place in music history. Buzzcocks, The Fall, Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses, Electronic, Oasis. These bands shaped the lives of successive generations of teenagers and changed the course of popular culture for the best part of four decades.

Manchester: Looking for the Light through the Pouring Rain is a portrait of these individuals, the city and their times, by legendary Manchester-born photographer Kevin Cummins. Whether it be a rain-soaked stage in Brazil, a rented room in Whalley Range, through the fug of smoke in Strawberry Studios, or on the dancefloor at The Haçienda, Cummins' exquisite photographs document the transcendent pop moments of Manchester's most famous sons from 1976 to today. Cummins' stunning visual record of the city is published by Faber & Faber and complemented by textual contributions from Paul Morley, Stuart Maconie and others.

To celebrate its publication and an accompanying exhibition at Central Saint Martins (Rock 'n' Roll Art, 9 November-9 December 2009), Kevin Cummins, Paul Morley and guests explore Manchester's unique place in the history of modern music.

Everyone attending will receive a first edition of Loops; the journal of contemporary music writing published by Domino Records and Faber & Faber.
