The Rehearsal
Drama Centre London presents
The Rehearsal
By Jean Anouilh
Translated by Jeremy Sams
To pass the time, the Duke and a select group of intimates, wives and mistresses have gathered in an enormous country house to put on a production of Marivaux's bittersweet comedy of manners, The Double Inconstancy. The company are almost word perfect, the costumes ready - the only thing threatening to unbalance the Duke's careful preparations is that he is falling head over heels in love with Lucile, the young girl engaged as a Governess to look after the resident orphans.
Effortlessly interweaving Marivaux's play with his own, Anouilh reminds us that the power of love is as compelling as it is fragile.
