John Cage: Europera 5
Europera 5
A rare opportunity to hear a late theatre piece by Cage, his Europera no. 5 from 1991.
After confronting his 'dislikes' in various pieces, Cage turned his attention to European opera from the 18th and 19th centuries in a series of works entitled Europeras, each drawing on arias from the traditional opera repertoire. These are then juxtaposed using chance procedures, which also determine where the props go, where people are staged, and what is actually lit in the theatre.
Also present is a radio, a television, an early gramophone player, and the 'Truckera' - a collage of over 100 operas reduced to low rumble that occasionally audibly passes through the proceedings. In Europera No.5, we reach an almost Beckett-like poignant musing on the past and present mingled with Cage's rarely absent and irrepressible humour.
Performed by Apartment House directed by Anton Lukoszevieze and David Ryan, it also features the magnificent soprano, Lore Lixenberg, who has recently been heard at the Royal Opera, Copenhagen, Vienna Konzerthaus and the Salzburg Festival.
