Rutherford and Son
Presented by Drama Centre London
BY GITHA SOWERBY
DIRECTED BY ADAM BARNARD
On the outskirts of a desolate northern town stands the house of John Rutherford, who, like his father, runs an imposing glass factory which is the town's main employer. Rutherford has always meant the factory to pass to his children, but they have their own ideas. His eldest son has married an impoverished office girl, his youngest has joined the Church. His daughter, meanwhile, has lost the best years of her life keeping house for her widower father. Now all three younger Rutherfords have news for their dad - revelations which, between them, may shatter this fragile glass dynasty forever.
One hundred years ago, a brilliant young woman, Githa Sowerby, outshone Bernard Shaw, Galsworthy and Granville Barker with this searing interrogation of class, gender and the generation gap.
